Education & Football Development (age 16-18)...
Education and football hand-in-hand
Birmingham City’s Football Development and Education Programme is a ground-breaking project for school leavers, designed to allow young people to pursue a career in football without compromising their education.
What happens to 16 year-olds who are desperate to follow their dreams of playing professional football despite failing to secure an Academy apprenticeship, but are also conscious of the need to further their education in case their ambitions of playing football for a living are never realised?
A solution is provided by Birmingham City’s innovative Football Development and Education Programme. By providing access to high-class coaching and close links with a professional club, students are able to maximise their chances of ultimately turning professional. But the course also entails studying for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, a qualification that can allow participants to study at university and significantly enhances their employability.
Funded by the PLPFA Community Fund and Shenley Academy, the programme has enjoyed a 100% achievement and retention rate for students in the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. Many participants have gained places at leading universities such as Loughborough, Cardiff and Birmingham, with the remainder going on to work for employers such as Birmingham City FC, the Police Service and the Armed Forces.
You have to be very dedicated to your football but also to your academic studies.
